Position Title: Chief Operating Officer
Position Type: Full-time Role 
Salary: Compensation for this role starts at $160k and can increase based on the candidate’s level of experience
Geography: NY/PA/NJ preferred; however we are open to candidates nationally. All staff are currently working remotely and we are remaining responsive to the evolving pandemic


BASTA is seeking a Chief Operating Officer who will play an instrumental role in taking BASTA from a startup to scale-up organization. The COO will bring a unique lens to BASTA’s executive team - specifically a lens that is consistently driving towards operational efficiency while recognizing that flexibility and adaptability are necessary for this phase of growth. The COO serves as a trusted partner to the CEO and will be involved in pivotal decisions that impact the long-term trajectory of the organization. 
The preferred location is the tri-state area although strong candidates based in other locations will be considered.


Leadership and Strategic Planning (20%)

  • Lead strategic planning across BASTA and oversee annual goal setting and progress monitoring efforts using the OKR framework. Lead the executive team in continuously refining processes and frameworks to support OKRs and ensure fidelity in execution

  • Establish goals, objectives, and operational plans in collaboration with the CEO and Chief Program Officer that support the rapid growth of BASTA

  • Oversee key strategic functions, specifically managing the successful outcomes for the Finance, Operations,  Technology, and People/HR teams. The COO will have the opportunity to drive the vision and organizational design for these functions and subsequently lead the hiring effort

  • Serve as a strategic thought partner and collaborative problem solver on the executive team

Financial Strategy and Operational Management (30%)

  • Support successful financial management and P&L reporting, which includes strategic financial planning and management

  • Partner with external accountants to plan and manage annual audit(s)

  • Collaborate with third-party consultants to support BASTA’s legal, financial, real estate, and insurance coverage

  • Identify and maintain process improvements that drive efficiency, accountability, and performance, while prioritizing organizational needs and transparency

Technology / Data Management Strategy (30%)

  • Oversee the growth and refinement of BASTA’s custom student/staff technology platform

  • Lead technology team and collaborate with data team to envision and build the data model and technical infrastructure that will foster BASTA’s growth and scaling strategy

  • Identify and implement a strategic approach to decision-making around technical needs (e.g., build or buy, hire or contract, whether an automation is “worth the effort”, etc.)

  • Develop a roadmap for investment in new technology, product enhancements, expert consultants and future staff 

People/Human Resources (20%)

  • Ensure development and implementation of comprehensive performance management plans for all direct reports

  • Oversee payroll, benefits, and talent management, from recruitment and onboarding to retention and professional development

  • Establish policies that promote company culture and vision

  • Champion Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices in management, leadership, and processes

  • Collaborate with contractors when/if necessary to achieve org-wide professional development goals

On a typical day, you might: 

  • Launch our annual organization-wide OKR (goal setting) process

  • Determine Basta's shared service strategy for technology and operations teams

  • Present financial and operations highlights at a quarterly board meeting

  • Work with external consultants to build Basta's 5-year technology roadmap

  • You have 10+ years of directly related professional experience or related, demonstrated experience with significant experience managing at least two of the functions/departments captured in the job description

  • You have at least 5+ years of experience recruiting, developing, coaching and growing individuals and teams with a focus on cultivating and maintaining a data-driven, results-oriented, and high-feedback culture

  • You have a track record of building efficiencies and implementing process improvements driven by outstanding attention to detail, strong organizational skills and a systems-mindset

  • You take complete ownership over your work, but you’re not afraid to ask for help when you need it. You’re also willing to jump in wherever you’re needed.  

  • Bachelor’s degree required
